And the other brand CORNELO A brand owned by a Henk Kokke of Kokke Sport, and made in Sint Willebrord, the Netherlands, paintwork was done in Belgium. Henk was a fan of Ernesto’s work, and amalgamated his son’s name Corne with Colnago, This company actually used Columbus Gilco tubing on a model, and the frames are highly regarded Cut outs on lugging tend to be heart shaped. The Belgian brand U Scannini also produced a road bike in the early 90’s with gilco tubing and chromed headtube lugging, easily identifiable by the “U.Scannini”cut out on top of the bb shell, here’s an example I sold a while back here’s an attempt at a Colnago, listed on a Belgian auction site, but look at the head tube / top tube lug, not one used by Colnago. The other two main culprits are again Belgian LOVERDI and MARTELLY this example has a Cinelli casted bottom bracket shell Martelly made lugs with inverstment cast ‘clover’, this frame has a stamp on the head tube lug, notice each ‘leaf’ on the clover stamp is bigger than a Colnago stamp, and the end on the ‘stem’ on this example differs to Colnago, fork crowns visibly have no stamping either this is a MARTELLY. Another fake, look at the leaves on the ‘clover’ only a very few early Colnagos had a ‘proper’ clover on the seat tube / top tube lug.

Hope this helps!

Looked at the add and the bike looks like someones diy project (rarely seen a c50 build up with centaur). With 2k in Euro's the orice is too high for a ex pro frame, would only buy this if the seller could show me a genuine purchase bill. I can't comment on the frame without closer inspection, however, as stated above, it's difficult and expensive to try to fake the split chainstays and lugged frame shape of the C50.

That said, The very clean brazing, tapered and cut-out lugs, and fast-back seat stays all say that this is a very high quality frame, and probably hand made. Looking at the equipment (which is all high-end, though from differing eras and makers), either most of the original equipment has been replaced, or the bike was sold as a bare frame and built up. You should remove the rear wheel and inspect the drop-outs. If they are stamped Campagnolo then the bike is almost certainly hand-made. If the Front wheel drop-outs are similarly stamped, then the fork is probably original. The non-drive side bottom bracket cup (picture 5) might give some clue to origin if the thread sizes are marked on it. Check out bb size standards.

So maybe they varied it slightly, just cuz, or because a customer requested something slightly modified. I have actually seen a fake EPS, which was lugged. But there were no alloy cups in the headset for the bearings to seat in, the bearings would just sit right in the carbon bevels within the frame, like you see a lot of today. Also, the EPS downtube has 3 ribs inside the tube for added strength running down it's length which are completely invisible from the outside, but when I stuck my finger up the headtube and in the downtube, they weren't there. It was just a plain round tube. And the miters of the tubes inside the lugs were awful. And who knows what kinds of epoxy/resins they used to glue it all together.

None of the C50's uses the strong sloping (italics) COLNAGO lettering. Only the C50's built after the introduction of the Extreme frames use the COLNAGO lettering with the partial clover leaf icon and the lettering on the seat tube went from a cascading vertical font to a linear font following the tube direction. The paint job on this frame is an attempt perhaps to copy one of the Colnago WX colour schemes?

I've never seen that paint job. The one you link to was a standard and similar to the C50 I bought back in about 2005 (mine was yellow) but is quite different compared to the one you're considering buying. A couple of things you might look at: - What is the size of the seatpost?

Thanks very much! Great article. I’m having a bike i want to sell with an U.

Plain fluted seat stay caps Three top tube cable guides. #12 on right hand rear dropout 1977, 78, or 79? May we add your pre-1983 Colnago serial number to this list?

EBay vendor claims it is an 80s team team bike confirmed to be real by Ernesto Colnago when he visited his bike shop?? “This NEW early 80s frame size 23 Center to top top tube 22 CTC THIS IS A RARE ONE ~you’re probably never ever seen a real COLNAGO TEAM FRAME MADE IN ITALY BY COLNAGO FOR THE POLISH TEAM YES TURE (Ernesto Colnago verified it himself in my shop early 80s and he was not happy that I had two of them ) confirms that it’s real made for the Polish team this is a rare opportunity to own this will take a look at the pictures you’ll probably never see another one like it” •.

I read you sold the U Scanini one you pictured here. If the bike i’m talking about has the Gilco tubing, what do you think would be a good European price for it? And what would be a good price for it when offered outside of Europe, considering it has some cosmetic damage from crashing? Author Hi and thanks for the image link, allways make my job easier! I’d say it’s the real deal, the ‘Geo’ decor would be expensive and very labour intensive to replicate, the frame is lugged carbon, there may well be a serial no. Under the bb or on the front mech hanger.

This is just what I discovered by trying to research online the following from a ’73 Colnago Super restorer “Early Colnago’s can be a bit difficult to determine their exact age because they didn’t use serial numbers. At most they would have a size stamped on a drop out and steer-er tube.” The earliest presumed date of Colnago incorporating a serial number onto frames is mentioned by Chuck Schmidt, author of the site “Serial numbering only started for Colnago on USA-bound bikes when the CPSC started requiring tracking, etc. West Coast Cycles was importing Colnago at the time and the serial numbers started for their product. There is still no way to find manufacturing date by the numbers, except that they are 1979 or later.” Chuck is also the author of the, from 1968 – 1983, and here there is no mention of factory stamped serial numbers. Here’s some examples of Colnago bottom bracket shells, with the brand’s stamp and clover cut out, but no serial numbers On later steel models, like the Master Olympic, the Spiral Conic slx.

Here they have and what a bike it is! First launched back in 2012 the CLX 3.0 has evolved into the must have mid range road bike. Using the same geometry as the top of the range M10 and C59 frames, in a sloping design for added comfort, this two-piece monocoque frame is both incredibly stiff and responsive. The Ferrari of the bike world, why not join the exclusive Colnago owners club today.

I’ve been looking at new bikes, but now I’ve fallen in love with a beautiful secondhand Colnago in excellent shape with Campagnolo Chorus 10 sp, but without any papers. The seller bought it secondhand a few years ago and doesn’t know the age of it. There is a “Master” stamped on the top tube and the seller claims that it’s titanium. I’ve been searching the internet, but I have a hard time finding something that looks identical. Is there any way where I can be reassured that it’s titanium. You are my last straw Can you help me? I have picture of the bike if that is of any help.

Bianchi Celeste Green Bianchi celeste green is nearly as famous as Bianchi bicycles. Bianchi has used this color for several decades, and most high-end quality Bianchi cycles were available or were only offered in this color. Celeste green is a light, but not pale, shade of sea-foam green. Cycling legend Fausto Coppi rode aboard a celeste Bianchi, according to the Bianchi website.

So I guess there are a few fake lugged colnagos as well, but very rare, not like the molded frames. Frame looks legit, the paintjob somehow doesn't. Since the add is from Belgium I guess this might be a repainted Rabobank frameset.

If you know something about particular models to stay away from I’ll be happy for your inputs. All the best and thanks in advance. Lars, I just purchased my first steel Colnago and am ready to make it a masterpiece. I know little about classic Colnagos and was wondering if you would help me identify the model and time period is was built. The frame is in good shape and the rear derailleur is Nuovo Record. This leads me to think the bike was manufactured at least before ’81. Your web site/blog is great.

Seen loads of these and some of them where (like loads of ex pro stuff) really abused and had to be repainted to obtain any resale value. Have to say I would stay away from a frame with such a history since the only C50 frameset with loosening joints where these specific frames.

I bought a second hand Colnago Master online, and it looks real enough. But I would like to seek your help please, to confirm if it is genuine or not. The pictures can be found at 1. One thing that is bugging me, is that the paint job for the ‘C’ and the ‘club’ under the saddle does not seem even or consistent. Another thing is the uneven application of the decal behind the seat tube. You can see in one of the pictures that the decal does not line up at the back.

Just a shot in the dark with out more pics of bottom bracket shell & other details mericans are nice bikes edit: if it is a merican, which form a quick google glance it might be, judging by the filed lugs & cut out it could be, it still is a very nice bike, mericans are british made, not as well known as colnago, but of simular quailty. But it could also be a number of other makes edit #2: the more i google images of merican the more i doubt it is, mericans seem to have very elaborate lugs, but maybe not all of them did • • • • •.
