What appears to be threads are just machine tool marks. The model name was ground off (or lined through) and the new model name MAK-90 was stamped. Some had 90 added to the serial number that denoted the year of import (1990). They were named 'Sporter,' and sold with a five-round magazine, to make them seem more like hunting rifles.

Around a million MAK-90s were exported to the USA in the early 90s. According to 'JA,' of AK47.net, more MAK-90 rifles were imported from China than any other model of semi automatic AK type rifle from any other country. MAK-90s were made to shoot 7.62x39 or.223 caliber ammunition. A very few were made to shoot 5.45 x 39 ammo. The retail price for a new MAK-90s was often less than $200. They often were sold with three 5-round magazines, an oil bottle, a cleaning kit and a sling. A magazine ad from the early 1990s (I would venture to opine that the most common model NOW (2009) for sale in the USA is the, modified for 30-round magazines.

Norinco MAK-90 Model of the Kalashnikov AK-47 Norinco MAK-90 Model of the Kalashnikov AK-47 General Specifications Calibers: Usually 7.62x39mm; rarely 5.56x45mm Overall length 35.1 inches Barrel length 16.34 inches Weight with empty magazine 8 lbs 4 ounces Receiver metal thickness: 1.6mm (most other stamped AKs have 1mm thick receivers) The letters/numbers MAK-90 stand for Modified AK-1990. I have owned three of them, and share some of my photos in this web page. The MAK-90 is a Chinese factory built AK model exported to the USA from China from 1990 through 1994 by two Chinese export companies: and. Following the import ban in 1989, the Chinese developed an AK which met the 'sporting purposes' clause. (The earlier AKs were banned because of their 'evil' features: pistol grips, folding stocks, threaded muzzles and bayonets.) The new model was basically an AK with a wood thumb-hole stock and no bayonet lug (although you do sometimes see MAK-90 receivers with under-folder holes drilled and filled).

You want an AK47? Then pay the bucks for a PolyTech, MAADI, or MAK90 from pre-'98. So I own a norinco ak47 and a Egyptian maadi imported by century arms. Listen I've been told how crappy these maadis were from a few people but after I field stripped it, it looked solid, matching numbers, g2 trigger, bore looked good and there was no loose parts and mag wasn't loose at all. The real test was when I shot it, my norinco nhm 91 outshot my friends saiga at the range so I know what a good ak47 feels, shoots and sounds like. My Egyptian maadi performed amazing, no jams and pretty accurate at a 100 yds out.

Original model name ground off, and re-stamped MAK-90 Sporter 'JA' posted the following remarks on the Gunsnet Forum in 1999-2000. (I cleaned up the grammar a little bit, for clarity): All Chinese AK rifles have barrels that are larger in diameter than European AK's. I took some measurements: All measurements were taken with calipers and the barrels were measured 1/2 way between the front sight and gas block. The stamped receiver MAK-90 in 7.62 and.223 have barrels that are.608' in diameter.

(Adapted from Peter Kokalls) Pre ban Maadi rifles were only imported by and stamped on the left side of the receiver 'STEYER SECAUCUS,N.J.' If not stamped this way the rifle is a post ban rifle. They are rare with about 2000 imported. They go for $1500-$2000 and are as close to an original Russian AKM as you can get. Some were converted to full auto and were the AKs used in the movie Red Dawn Post ban rifles were imported by several importers. PARS INTERNATIONAL CORP.

Super mario rpg legend of the seven stars rom pt br. Great info, but the MISR S/A I have has the tack welded muzzle nut and a complete bayonet lug (it was ground on but a bayonet will still lock on securely) I bought the gun used in the spring 1999, the previous owner said he had it for a year before he sold it to me. The serial number is very low CM000xx as in the last two digits are below 20. It came with a Tapco dragonuv plastic stock set installed. Were the S/A's imported earlier than 1999?

I am sure that if there are any still out there, ATF is still looking for them today.

Technically speaking, the ARM and MISR rifles would still be more 'genuine' than any of recent kits that may be built on US-made receivers, despite the unique Arabic markings on the rear sight leafs and rear sight blocks. You guys as always are correct, I have two '95' marked ARM's, Two '93' marked ARM's and an RML with no year mark in the Tashkent (Pharohs Hat) or any yerar or markings on my Misr-10. Many people get Misr confused with Misr Mak the Egyptian/Chinese Hybrid. Import/Export, a Steyr is the genuine semi Auto standard, but add the slant comp, a lil weld to the bbl lug ears, a wooden stock and plastic PG, and you have a poor mans Steyr. Maadi/MISR/ARM/RML/S/A/-10, about the same RPM longer bbl RPK version Misr/Mak Chinese/Egyptian Steyr top of the line Steyr late 80's (82-93) ARM/RML (93-95) S/A - 10 somewhere after that. One things for sure, once you get one, its like Lays Potato Chips..cant have just one!!!

I remember looking at one advertised as a 'performance' gas piston with FOUR groves instead of two.anyone ever heard of this? Funny thing is.it shoots great. THANKS.this is great information. I have a 1993 ARM. Bought it new, tack weld and thumbhole.

Pics would help. OK,,,Back from flying,, managed to snap a couple photos while swatting mosquitoes. I have three of these mags. They do not hold open the bolt, but they load very smoothly, lock into the rifle without any hang-ups, and they seem to be free of any burrs or dings. On the other hand I have a couple that are supposedly Polish and they don't work so well. So what do you think they are.??? They were sold as Yugos.

These rules are also posted every time you submit a link or self post so don't say you didn't see them.

JohnO, that is just an amazing picture. I remember the layout you did - I believe on The AK Forum - featuring that pic and more. You have a beautiful collection. Very impressive.

The PolyTech Legend is the AKS version of the Russian AK47 PolyTechs are king of all AK's one step below a genuine 1950 Russian original AK47. The Chinese MAK90's of pre-'98 import are also quality AK's like the Egyptian MAADI of same era. Don't mistake the Misr10 (takes only single stack mags) or Misr90 (Chinese&Maadi put together Frankenstein rifles) for the complete Chinese MAK90's. Only problem with the MAK90's is the slanted receiver. The three rifles mentioned above were manufactured by military personnel in military arsenals of said countries. All, and I mean ALL current imports today are INFERIOR to the rifles mentioned above.

Only took me 10 years:) I still have the certificate, I think even the thumbhole stock for some reason. It's one of my favorite AK's, right behind my Chinese spiker, & Legend. (If you want to appreciate Chinese workmanship, compare a Legend next to the Maadi). FYI, some Maadi's were imported in the early 1990's that had the FA Y stamped receiver with the FA hole drilled and then filled with a rivet. I had one of these for a couple of months and got a call from my friend who was the dealer that I pruchased the rifle from. He had been notified by the importer (Pars or Intrac, I can't remember) that these were considered machine guns by the ATF and had to be returned. I had to send it back to the importer and they sent me a new rifle without the rivet (Y stamp and no rivet).

There are still a few MAK-90s out there that are considered 'machine guns' by BATFE. (Sometimes imported by LABANU INC, Ronkonkoma, NY) These Norinco receivers have the 'third hole' for the auto sear drilled through the receiver just above the mag release. This will look like a second flattened rivet/screw right above the mag release.

'I wanted to invent an engine that could run for ever. I could have developed a new train, had I stayed in the railway. It would have looked like the AK-47 though.' -Mikhail Kalashnikov COMRADES: •: RIP 3-21-2018 • • • • • RESOURCES: • •: Updated July, 12th 2017 •: Updated July 08, 2017.

Remove the stock and look at the rear of the receiver. It may actually be straight cut. It would be good to be sure about this before you spend money on a specialized stock set. Typical MAK-90 Thumb-hole Stock A Chinese Replacement Stock Set There are some excellent books about the AK-47. You can probably buy these at Amazon.com. • AK-47 - the Grim Reaper, by Frank Iannamico (A VERY large and wonderful book!) Or do you think they are a combo of chinese and yugo parts???? I double checked and there are no markings of any kind on any of the parts. I only have one other mag that locks into the rifle better and has an as-smooth spring and follower. I thought it was an early Polish, but now that I look the follower hump looks a little too square.

The fit and finish of Poly Tech rifles pre or post ban are the best of all Chinese rifles imported. The trigger pull is the best of any AK imported into the US, yes even better than the 'holy grail' of AK's, the Bulgarian SLR-95.

If it was a genuine maadi it would be a arabic marked rear sight base.Everthing else is just a export model. The domestically used Maadi rifles and the export versions are all genuine Maadi rifles. The recent Maadi military kits, the Maadi ARM's, and the Maadi MISR's are all essentially 'genuine' Maadi rifles. The only ones that are actually, generally different are the bastardized MISR-90 models.
