We really need some fix. So my question is simple. Will Windows provide a descent solution for older graphics drivers.?

Also I think this is just a sad thing to do for consumers willing to switch to the new Windows 8 and are just forced to stay on Windows 7 due to this. There has not been a descent update for the x3100 driver in years. Is this consumer friendly thinking a la Intel? I can understand this is an older chipset, and it might take work to provide a driver for it, but where is the consumer in this matter?

It's a 10 yo graphics chipset, so the PC must be near to end of life. Support lasts of the order of 5 years. As far I can see Intel only supports stuff back to around 2011.The irony is that if the graphics chipset had been even older and there was ZERO driver support, the system would just run on the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver indefinitely and perform WAY better. So no hardware support ends up being better than some support. Please explain how that makes sense. If there is no way to fix the performance of this GPU with the official drivers, it makes me wonder if there is a way to get the Basic Display Adapter driver to offer higher resolutions than 1024x768.

Hey all, I have recently installed Win10 on two different Dell desktops (both different models). One was an upgrade from Win7, the other was a clean install (though the computer previously ran Win7). The computers both have the integrated Intel GMA3100 (G31/G33 chipset) graphics, the performance was more than acceptable under Windows 7, and yet in both cases, under Windows 10 (CU / 1703), the performance is ATROCIOUS. I should make clear a couple of things: First, I realize and acknowledge that the GMA3100 is no longer supported by Intel for versions of Windows newer than 7. Despite this, MS does provide a GMA3100 driver for Windows 10 via Windows Update (not included on the install ISO).

Hi, Welcome to Microsoft Community and we appreciate your interest in Windows 10. Let me help you to fix the issue. Since you are using Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family, I would recommend you to go to the below link and try updating the driver. You can also visit the below link for Intel Driver Update Utility If the issue still persist, I suggest you to contact to the computer manufacturer for further assistance. Hope it helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.

If so, that sounds like it might actually be the best option. [EDIT: Another thought.if the Basic Display driver works as well as it does, perhaps the official drivers are just so buggy that with hardware optimization on, they perform like crap? Is there a way under Windows 10 to turn off hardware graphics acceleration like there used to be on older versions of Windows? I tried the supposed registry hacks like DisableHWAcceleration and those didn't do anything; further research suggests that this registry key only influences the graphics behavior of.NET apps, not the system as a whole.].

I'm extremely frustrated at this point, and it seems ridiculous that just to make the basic system usable for basic tasks, one would have to throw in a modern 3D graphics accelerator. Here's a for your convenience. Besides support for Windows 10 and the shiny new DirectX 12 API, the new driver supports DirectX 11.3, PlayReady 3, and Miracast. It also fixes a bug with improper game scaling for programs running at non-native resolutions on touch-enabled systems. All IGPs in the Iris, Iris Pro, and HD Graphics families are compatible with this update. Check out the for more information.

For this Intel on-board video (965 Express Chipset Family), Windows 8 automatically installed its native driver (version 8.): which is different from the latest one available on Intel's Driver Download Center (version 8.): Release dates are: 04-Oct-11 for 10.2548 and 10-Feb-09 for 10.1930 Where these Windows 8's native drivers come from? And does Intel plans updating their old one to meet Win8's requirements and solve all compatibility issues? On both versions I had some fullscreen problems on several video games (for example, Gothic) and I'd like to know that in the future my vga will be fully compatible with Windows 8. Thank you!:). This is just really sad to hear, cause the driver Windows is providing is bugged like crazy. I run the same chipset and it is pretty much impossible to play any game with it, flash player is crashing like every 5 minutes and I cannot even test the frame rate from the the driver. And yes, it is pretty much impossible to install the windows 7 driver.

Have you tried installing the Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode to see if performance goes better? If that doesn't work, then that means the new driver model in 1703 is affecting you in unexpected ways, in my case, I had to revert back to 1511 and upgrade to 1607 afterwards, because 1703 has issues with some programs, specially if they need opengl or direct access to DX libraries. That is either fixed with 1703 compliant drivers, or sticking with 1607 until a fix or a new microsoft driver is available. But you can always try your luck with Windows 7 drivers and see if that works.

Versions 1511 and 1607 are unafected because they rely on the WDM 2.1 (IIRC), while 1703 introduces WDM 2.2, which is the culprit of all the failures happening recently. If you can, you can stick with 1607 instead of 1511, 1607 works faster, gives better boot times and will get more support than 1511, which will be deprecated very soon. Avoid 1703 at least for a year, until MS realizes how to fix the bugs they introduce everytime they do a major OS release.
