I was lucky, everything works great now. I used the main.ini(M4-11DM.INI) from the original working driver. You'll have to find out which one your hardware uses. For my driver install, it consists of 3.ini/.inf files. STWRT64.INF (64bit version) - modded stwrt64.ini (64bit version) - modded M4-11DM.INI (just an example, yours will most likely be a different name)- left alone. I think mine worked because Vista and Windows 7 are very similar. XP is a lot different than Windows 7.

Been having a similar issue and none of the above suggestions have helped. Recently upgraded the memory in my XPS 420 to 6 gigs so I had to switch from the 32 bit build of windows which I never had an issue with to the 64 bit version Win 7 (sp1) which refuses to accept the driver. I've tried the compatibility for Vista (including the SP's) and XP and I either get the component not found error or it'll install but will display the speakers/headphones as unplugged and can't do anything at all to make it work. I've lost track of how many times i've tried installing, deleting, uninstalling and reinstalling and i've yet to find anything that seems to work.

I've got the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, and tried everything above, numerous times and for all variations, but to no avail (no sound through the headphone). What finally worked for my Sigmatel C-Major was the Realtek AC'97 XP drivers (I've read bad things about their Vista beta drivers). I uninstalled my existing drivers, and ran the realtek install program in XP SP2 compatibility as administrator. Can't remember where I got the drivers, but they are on the realtek site (didn't use that site though as it's so slow).

Before I installed I checked and saw that it's a SigmaTel C-Major Audio device. I downloaded the recommended driver (9524859.exe), but when I run the installer it says 'Device Object not present'. I also tried running the installer in XP SP2 compatibility mode, but got the same response. I saw there was another post where a user was able to get it running, but no mention of what driver was used. Thanks in advance!
