Hi, Having just migrated 4 disks from an ageing DS411+II to a new DS1817+, I can confirm that your observation about the significant improvement in the built-in Synology disk migration process. There are 22 steps in the “2.2 Migrating between different Synology NAS models” section of Synology’s DSM 5.x migration knowledge base. The 4 disk migration under DSM 6.1 was 6 steps (I did follow some of the early steps in the knowledge base article because I did not know that they were redundant under DSM 6.1). It was over so quickly (less than 10 minutes), that I powered down the new NAS and powered it back up again expecting it to require more steps to complete the migration. None of the things that the knowledge base warned would be lost, were actually lost. The new NAS simply booted up and continued where the old one left off.

As my camera management settings somehow reset themselves I had no other option other than using smart search or manually viewing. I have about a 2-3min segment where the persons are sticking the head over my fence and at one point even climbing up and passing a ladder over that gets repeatedly missed by smart search. My understanding is that the Synology and QNAP are evenly matched when it comes to Surveillance Station, VPN and just using it as a RAID server. The main difference is cost.

Netgear switches are kind of crap in imho. I currently have a DS1810, DS1813, DS1815. I can get 200+ MB thruput from each. You can try everything in the world but if you switch is the problem your never going to fix it. Connect the NAS directly to your test box, then start troubleshooting.

I thought about it and most that come from surveillance cameras companies work mostly with their brand although some support a few brands, it’s not wide enough to cover all. The only thing I haven’t liked is how much motion it was recording. I was getting very sensitive motion detection and ended up recording a ton of video. SS is set up to leave motion detection to the camera, and I have my detection area set up and that SEEMS to work OK, but the real problem is with the sensitivity setting.
