While this might disappoint fans of Bardock’s previous characterization, the fact that his father wasn’t special among the Saiyans actually helps Goku’s character arc; he isn’t special because of who his father was or why he was spared, but because of the choices he made and who he grew up to be. While Goku is the only Saiyan that is intentionally spared from Planet Vegeta’s destruction, he is still sent to Earth because its inhabitants were weak and underdeveloped, and he’s still perceived as a low-class weakling and insignificant by Vegeta, Raditz, and the surviving Saiyans, making his story still one of defying the expectations of his birth. It’s not as satisfying as the original context for Goku being sent to earth, but there are enough nuances to Goku’s backstory in this film that preserve the integrity of his character arc in the grand scheme of the series. Regardless of how you feel about Goku’s backstory, his characterization is at its finest in this movie.

Son Goku and His Friends Return was the light-hearted return the franchise desperately needed. Cooler’s Revenge is a pretty blatant attempt to cash in on the worldwide success of the Frieza saga, but it’s a formula that works, and once you get past the repetitive story, there is a lot to enjoy in this movie. It’s a simple premise: Frieza’s conveniently never-mentioned brother seeks revenge on Goku, and with Cooler comes his very own Ginyu Force. Salza, Neiz, and Dore aren’t quite as flamboyant or memorable as the illustrious quintuplet, but they make for an exciting showdown with Gohan and Piccolo, which finally sees the return of the Namekian’s extended arm technique. Meanwhile, Goku’s battle with Cooler looks stunning, and each gets a new and exciting transformation. Cooler reveals a masked form beyond Frieza’s fourth, while Goku’s latest Super Saiyan transformation, complete with bird resurrection, is one of the most underrated power-ups in the series. Cooler doesn’t develop as much as we’d like, and ultimately falls into the same trap as his brother, but hey – if it ain’t broke.

Most of the people at my showing on opening night were men my age, and Dragon Ball commands significant cultural capital. If you consider Toonami the supplier, then Dragon Ball was more or less the gateway drug that led a generation to better anime like Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, Rurouni Kenshin, the list goes on. But that is only part of it: What’s really a trip is that Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the 20th Dragon Ball movie, and the fourth featuring the Broly character. Taken together with those box office earnings, that suggests not just sustained popularity, but growing popularity. Should we talk about Broly?

UPDATE: Toei Animation confirmed the is coming over on Twitter. Original story Broly is one of the more polarizing characters in all of the Dragon Ball franchise, despite not being considered canon, but that may soon change. Possible leaked promotional material for this year’s Dragon Ball Super movie seemingly reveals the title of the film will be Broly. The origin of the leaked material, which includes a poster and other merch, is unclear but it’s all over and, along with a whole lot of positive and negative responses to Broly possibly becoming canon. Turles as a concept is an interesting idea, and he and Goku share some well-choreographed battle sequences, but for every action scene, there’s a Gohan and Icarus scene to cancel it out, while the villainous minions are once again wasted. Not to mention the fact that Turles regrows Gohan’s tail. It’s such a small detail but so blatantly a plot device, without any explanation or build-up, that it means The Tree of Might has to fall below the other par-for-the-course DBZ movies on this list. Second Coming is as bland as Bio-Broly when it comes to its plot, but it does at least have one thing going for it. First and foremost, Second Coming doesn’t pretend that it’s anything but an action flick. You can sit and laugh through the first half of the film, which features some strong Goten and Trunks moments, and a wacky dinosaur subplot that wouldn’t hurt if it didn’t exist. All you need to know is that Broly is back.

What is an interesting twist though is exploring the idea of Goku’s spirit bomb being useless if there’s no energy left on the planet for it to draw from. There's also a weird subplot with Gohan saving a purple dragon in a forest fire that reminds you--oh yeah, there's weird stuff like dragons and dinosaurs in this world. There's a weirdly pro-environment message being pushed forward in this movie, but I guess that's natural for a film where your heroes are killing evil wildlife. 3/7 Dragon Balls. 14. The World’s Strongest (1990/1998) Some creep named Dr. Kochin gathers the Dragon Balls (this is kind of a running theme through the movies) and uses his wish to release Dr.

He first appeared in the eighth Dragon Ball Z movie, Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, in 1993. The plot of the movie is straightforward: Goku and his best frenemy Vegeta think themselves to be the only Super Saiyans in the whole wide universe, but it turns out there’s another one, a legendary one, of prophecy. To be 100 percent fair here, Broly was sort of a nothingburger of a character. He’s named after broccoli, to begin with. Goku made him cry when they were toddlers on their home planet—that’s his ax to grind—and he speaks in one-word sentences, on account of his father, Paragus, training him to be a weapon and nothing else. His weakness is—get this—that he’s too powerful.

Kazuma Kurosawa, Masato Mitsuka, and Tatsuya Nagamine’s storyboards are brilliantly staged and incredibly atmospheric, ringing out the most emotion of every scene and making every moment pop with impact. The combination of excellent boards and exploitative character designs give the animators a lot to work with. Even dialogue driven-scenes are imbued with energy thanks to bouncy character acting, where even limited movement is made more alive with a careful balance of subtle nuances and over-the-top expressions. The centerpiece of the film is the fight with Broly itself, a fifty-minute thrill ride that flies by faster than its runtime. Despite its length, the fight keeps itself interesting by constantly moving in unique ways, with characters flying across the screen with insane speed and delivering blows with painful impact.

In spite of being nearly as bland as Bio-Broly where storytelling is concerned, Broly - Second Coming is an unabashed action flick through and through. You don’t need to know anything going in except Broly is back and he’s eager to kick butt. The movie’s first half is a little slow, but the second half lets you sit back and enjoy Broly beating the heck out of Gohan. The action is actually really strong here; this is one of the few instances Adult Gohan gets the spotlight. Goten and Trunks also fight, somehow Videl doesn’t die, and then Goku shows up, having the three Son family members deliver an epic and iconic Family Kamehameha.

There are some notable exceptions, though. The more recent movies are part of the official Dragon Ball continuity, while a couple of the earlier specials have recently been canonized by both the manga and the anime. Whether or not a movie is canon won't necessarily impact its ranking, although expect to find the movies that go out of their way to confuse the timeline lower down on the list.

Like the entries before it, Super Android 13! Is all over the place as an actual movie, but it’s worth a watch for the individual moments. Lord Slug sees the return of a Namekian villain in a movie that tries to remind us of Dragon Ball’s King Piccolo, with mixed results. The titular character arrives on Earth and conquers the planet with the intention of using it as a spaceship. It’s hardly revolutionary, but it does offer us new information about the history of Namek, which at least gives Piccolo something to do in the movie. His extended battle with Slug’s henchman is some of the best Piccolo action in the movie series, while his energy transfer ultimately wins Goku the battle.

The Legendary Super Saiyan turned Broly into an iconic Dragon Ball villain, despite his never appearing in canon, and it’s easy to see why. Broly is a complex character (especially for one introduced in the movies), with incredible power and definite shades of PTSD.

The History of Trunks operates as a morbid “What If?” storyline as we get a glimpse of a world where Goku died of his heart disease and Androids 17 and 18 essentially wipe out the population. This turns into a touching story between an adult Gohan trying to mentor a young Trunks, as they train for five years to take down the Androids. The crux of all of this is the hope that Trunks can turn Super Saiyan for the first time and use that to destroy the Androids. It’s a difficult process, but the step that pushes Trunks towards finally transforming is a weighty, dramatic one. All of this culminates into a rather succinct story that reaches its natural conclusion.

It’s also the first time we see Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, and Piccolo fight the same enemy all at once. Of course, Goku winds up saving the day, but his absorption of the Spirit Bomb was unique at the time, so we’ll let that one slide.

10. Cooler’s Revenge (1991/2002) The fifth and sixth Dragon Ball Z films are almost held to a higher pedigree. Before the series got so set on bringing back characters like Frieza, the idea of vengeful family members showing up to kick ass and take names over his death was the next best thing. At this point in the series Frieza was certainly the “golden goose” and so to not only connect one film to the character, but two (and truly, the right way to do these movies is as one big double-feature, which still won’t run very long) held a lot of promise behind it.

It’s been three years since then, and a lot has changed. The Dragon Ball franchise is undergoing an exciting multimedia renaissance with a large swath of new and successful projects in the spheres of tabletop, gaming, manga, and at the center of it all – the Dragon Ball Super anime. Fans are no longer lacking for Dragon Ball content, and some may have even had their fill of it. With this in mind, it feels like Broly has been designed to be as crowd-pleasing as possible, even more than its predecessors, to strengthen fans’ interest in the franchise. I mean that literally; Naohiro Shintani’s new character designs were heavily pushed in the film’s early marketing, long before the reveal of its titular villain. Tadayoshi Yamamuro’s previous character designs for the franchise have been stiff and over-detailed, using too many lines and blocky shapes to represent musculature, clothing, and hair.
