Springfield 1911a1 Serial Number Lookup
Dating a Springfield Armory Springfield Armory. Appearantly the search function is not my. You'll have to contact Springfield with the serial number. We have a 'sticky' at the top of this forum that talks about Springfield's serial numbers, but bottom line, pistols with an 'NM' serial number tend to mean that the pistol was built here in the United States, as opposed to Brazil.
Bob, All of us who 'hang out' in the Springfield section of this forum owe a huge debt of gratitude to You and also to Tom for the superb work you do and your time contributed. That's 'non-compensated' time too, just in case anyone is wondering. Therein, we can all get a visual image of how significant your efforts are to making this forum a better place. Especially this part of it! I do want to add a bit more regarding those markings. So not to be remiss in omitting some further information.

The GI replica guns, I'd leave alone as the point in buying one of them is to have a GI style gun. MILSPEC: I'd replace the rear sight and maybe add a beaver tail grip safety Loaded and above I'd leave alone with the exception of grip panels and grip screws. I don't get why Springfield ships those things with Torx screws in them. I've owned two SA milspecs, a micro and a loaded. Sold the micro back to Springfield because it wasn't reliable, sold the loaded when I figured out that life is better without bells and whistles. Had two thumb safeties break in half.
All easy to fix stuff and no big deal really but. The one that I don't like is that the NM slide over hangs the rear of the frame when it is in battery.
The Mil-spec model's can have either a N or NM prefix, with the N being more common. Springfield's Loaded models, could either have the N or NM prefix. Model's with the N prefix are imported almost complete with the exception of the sight and beavertail grip safety cut's. These cuts are done at Springfield's facility in Geneseo, IL. The NM prefix Loaded's (as well as the Range Officer, TRP and Trophy Match) have the magwell and most of the internal cuts done, but no rail cuts.

The rest of the 1911 prefixes such as LW, TGO-2, TGO-3 and EMP all come from Springfield's Illinois facility, though I have seen Champion LW's marked 'Brazil'. The Custom Shop gun prefixes such as CRG, FBI, DEA, and TGO-1, as well as any other Custom Shop marked gun, are also made in Illinois. According to Springfield, the Custom Shop marked guns are built using 'National Match' frames. Springfield uses the prefixes of 'N' and 'NM' to designate 1911-A1 type pistols, just as we used 'AM' as the prefix for the P9 series of pistols. The only pistols which use the national match frames are the complete custom pistols built through our custom shop. These pistols have 'Springfield Custom' etched on the slide, and will have the 'NM' prefix to the serial number. Deb, Custom Shop Coordinator Springfield Custom Springfield Inc.
Nothing to do with the weapon. Springfield replaced the slide. The rest of the weapon is still in service. Back In The Day, I ran about five hundred rounds a week through two or three Springfields, in matches, leagues and teaching. Sleep, eat, shoot. How many Springfields were involved on a particular day depended on what activity it was.
For example, is the tang (radius) different as well, or would I still want to go with a S&A.220? It's that type of thing I'm trying to figure out ahead of time before I get knee deep in the project. That is where the 'MADE IN BRAZIL' rollmarks come from. Placed above the serial number. That is one variety of markings that will show up on Springfield's G.I., Mil-Spec and Loaded pistols. Another is the 'Geneseo IL USA' found just above the serial number. There's essentially two common variants of this. For example, in the Mil-Spec line, if it has a N serial number prefix, you will find 'IMBEL BRAZIL' or 'FI BRAZIL' laser etched in two places. The locations are the bottom side of the dustcover and underneath the right grip panel on the frame.
Graduate students are sometimes available to hire for research at reasonable rates. Springfield Armory NHS has no records that reflect the disposition of individual firearms during or after their manufacture at the historic Springfield Armory. As a Federal military facility from 1794-1968, the Springfield Armory's records are, by law, maintained by the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA). These records are official documentation of the administrative functions of the facility. Specific records having to do with the disposition of a particular gun after its manufacture tended to be temporary and thus were not preserved as a whole.

According to Springfield, the Custom Shop marked guns are built using 'National Match' frames. SA N vs SA NM guns While at a LGS today, I saw that they had a SA Mil-Spec parkerized. And then saw it was a NM marked gun. So I had to check it out. Damn was this thing nicely put together. The frame and slide was tight and rolled on bearings.
